Duanna Johnson’s Family needs donations for funeral.
The balance for Duanna Johnson’s funeral is $1195 and the funeral home is requiring Mrs. Skinner (Duanna’s mother) to pay it by tomorrow (11/14). The cost is a hardship, so we are asking anyone who can to donate. Please send any donations to:
N.J. Ford and Sons Funeral Home
12 S Parkway W
Memphis, TN 38109

If you want any clarification from NJ Ford, here is their contact number: (901) 948-7755.

Please forward this to as many people as you can!! Thanks!

Please donate or spread the word; if you can't afford yourself to donate but can put this someplace where people who can might read it, please put it there.

According to [info]spoggly, out of state checks won't work (due to the length of time it would take for them to get there) unless you overnight them and the funeral home says that credit cards would be ideal; however, barring either of those options, it may be good to just call the funeral home and ask that they delay payment due date until it's possible to raise more funding.

Update:
[info]sin_nombre: I called them earlier and they said that checks and money orders would have to have something indicating that it's for Duanna Johnson's funeral on the memo line. I know overnighting things is expensive, though.
...
I'm sorry for this being the last minute, but I just talked to her mother today and that is what the funeral home said about payment. She went there today to plan the service and they were going to charge $3195, but then dropped it back to $1195 as long as it's paid by tomorrow.

[info]spoggly: OK, I guess overnighting is the way to go, then. They said checks were out due solely to the fact that the deadline is tomorrow and sending them out of state would take too long, but if overnighting would work I guess that would be that.

Maybe we could try and organize something where someone writes a check and overnights it and gets reimbursed, just so the majority of the money could be donated instead of spent on shipping? IDK.

Update 2:
Subthreads of interest.

The behavior of the funeral home is really weird regarding payment; there's also this discussion of one of the remarks in the comments re: this post.

But according to [info]jame_alec's friend, who works in a funeral home, for at-cost funerals like this one, up front payment is typical. [info]jamaesi, who works at a cemetery, corroborates and provides additional information.

Update 3:
From [info]sin_nombre, A PayPal account has been set up for donations for her funeral; any funds collected over and above the goal of $1195 will be given to Ms. Johnson's family.

UPDATE 4: It is no longer crucial to donate money. So far TTPC has collected $5100.51. If you still want to donate, have at it, but keep in mind that any excess collected will be given to Duanna's mother to cover any incidental expenses (travel, floral arrangements, etc.).

Thanks!

Do you know how people are donating? I called and they said if you're out of state a check wouldn't work and that credit cards would be best, but idek how that would go.

I am not sure; i actually just found out about this and i'm not all that clear on the details there; it would have been nice if someone had, like [info]theamaranth suggested in [info]postqueer, set up a paypal account or something for them.

Like, you would think that the funeral home would want to make it easier for people to contribute, just so that they could get paid if nothing else.

Damn I am going to just call the funeral home, I won't get to the post office in time. Plus that way more funds can be raised.

I just called them:

1. No payment plan is available, "funeral homes stopped doing that 30 years ago"
2. The amount must be paid in full up front
3. The body will just be transferred to another facility

I tried to say that there is not enough time to leverage funds for their family, they said it just must be paid in full up front that's it.

Pffft ridiculous comparison!

Duanna Johnson's not nearly as important; i can't open her up on my lap and flip through her pages to read about Emily Gould's Exposed or radical stay-at-home-moms while i'm waiting for a seat at my favorite restaurant.

Where are your damn priorities?

Reposting here so someone might see it who can act on it, not trying to spam: Is there anyone in contact with Mrs. Skinner who could help her set up a PayPal account so that donations go directly to her? That might be both easier and safer than sending money to the funeral home itself.

You might try getting in touch with [info]sin_nombre (either by private message or in response to this post), who (i think) lives in Memphis and seems to have some way of contacting her.

With regards to the "PAY US NAO" and talk of how it's shady, I talked to one of my friends (who works in a funeral home) and she said that for at-cost funerals like this one, up front payment is typical.

I really wish I had some money to donate. D:

Just a small cavaet, I work for a cemetery, not a funeral home- cemeteries and funeral homes tend to be bitter rivals. It's ridiculous. The cemetery I work for has it's office in the same building as a funeral home... but both the cemetery and funeral home are owned by the same company so we play nicely.

Anyway, for at-need funerals, you must pay upfront for all the costs. Them's the breaks. I really wish it wasn't so because I see families who have a loved one unexpectedly die and they're immediately slammed not only with the loss but a big financial burden. There's all kinds of ridiculous laws surround this, but it's basically once you have the body prepared and the service done and casket used and space used... you can't really get them back if the family still doesn't pay.

It's not so much as shady but how things are now. :(
