I find it quite creepy (and silly...mainly silly) in a lot of ways but I do think it is interesting how different people, who admit they are themselves not from 'pure' backgrounds, negotiate these issues.

Actually, I remember this 18 year old or so kid who had the whole lock and key thing going and everything who tried out for American Idol. You could totally smell the homoerotic subtext between him and his dad coming out of the tv.

If a guy had to ask my dad's permission to get to know me, I would have like 5 friends. But of course, there are women you're friends with, women you fuck, and women you court. If a guy thinks that one day he might want to fill me with his seed, he'll have to think very carefully about it, and then ask my dad for the privilege of romancing my rosespending a chaste evening with me in a public place. Ugh I can barely form words about how much I hate the very idea of purity balls and the views they represent. Sex is shameful (if you're female)! It's something you need to be protected from (if you're female)! It's all on you to have willpower and not give in to normal physical urges (if you're female)! Plus the creepy quasi-incestuous subtext. Plus the creepy girls/women-as-property-of-men subtext (actually, that's pretty much just text).

But, that's not what I came here to say. I came here to let you know that I always enjoy what you have to say when I see you around, and we have a lot of shared interests, so I just added you as a friend.

I read that article too, and it's creepy as hell. And I say this as a Christian!

Girls as young as four were at that ball. I dunno, but I think that a four-year-old is too young to realize what she's agreeing to, don't you? Even a ten or eleven-year-old is too young to realize fully what agreeing to be abstinent really means. It's easy to say "Oh ick, I'm never having sex!!!" when one is eleven. When one is sixteen, probably not so much.

I don't have a problem with people choosing to abstain from sex; heck, I waited for marriage myself. No, I didn't have any kind of weird "purity contract" with my father. Eww. It's my body, and it was my choice. And those girls should be able to make that choice too... but only if it's what they really want. No one owns their bodies but them.

Unfortunately, with that whole "lock and key" thing, and the father giving the key to the girl's groom on her wedding day, well... it sure does send the message that her body doesn't belong to herself. It belongs to the men in her life, first her father, and then her husband.

Sick, sick, sick.
