I'm not sure why they wouldn't want to be called a lady. Isn't that what they are going for with the whole vagina thing and all that?

What are you then if you're a FTM, if you're not aiming to be female? I always assumed 'lady', 'woman' and 'female' were synonymous. Are they not now?

I understand that trans issues are complicated and mainstream society isn't at a point where these terms are in the vernacular, but like.. 'female to male' is pretty self explanatory.

Also I don't get how people can "D:" over Buck Angel. I've spent many nights watching his videos and.. knitting.

Stupid terminology question time!

"Trans man" refers to someone transitioning *to* male, not *from* male, right? This would make sense, given that they are now "he" and "him" and use other male terms.

And vice versa for "trans woman" - they're going MTF?

I'm having a bad brain day, on this one.

I do not understand why the discussion could not end with that.

Also I hate that "bigger battles" bullshit. The existence of larger issues does not automatically undo the validity of a particular concern. This is especially true if the concern can be readily fixed (or ameliorated at least somewhat).

Can I still be allowed to have no interest in joining that community? Please, I would like to know that I'm still totally allowed to only call my doctor when my cooz starts dripping something funky, and thus allowed to abstain from a community I have zero interest in joining because a) gathering medical info off the 'net is a pin-headed thing to do (so sayeth the guy on Medicare), b) the state of my genitals is NOT the business of the Internet, and c) my "clitdick" (to use Grody Tranny-Chaser™ Speak) is, in fact, twice as long as my attention span — ooh! shiny!

Okay, really, how hard is it to accept that a safe-space community might want to actually try acknowledging the existence of ALL of their members?

And boo-fucking-hoo at all the whining from SF-ers on being called on their language. I don't think it helps though to counter that jarring reaction by jumping on the offended wagon and beating her into a bloody pulp. That's really not going to do anything but get her pissed off anyway. Yeah, the right of majority to never be offended doesn't really outweigh the right of the minority to be acknowledged as human beings.

I just cannot grasp how someone cannot understand that you do NOT refer to a human being, especially one past the "looks like an alien" stage of infancy, as "it". I don't care what kind of "hi-larious" tranny panic you got on the scrolldown, you don't call someone an "it" and then act like it was a totally understandable thing for you to do when other people call you on it.

One time, for a paper, I was exploring language use in different online communities. To get a wide range of communities, one of the ones I looked at was a well-known white-power kind of place. I had expected to see the N word thrown around, and it was. But when I got to a thread that consistently referred to an African-American as "it", it upset me so much I nearly vomited. I threw out that portion of my notes and went back to a less revolting part of the Internet.

English is a flexible language. If you don't know what pronouns a person prefers, there are MANY ways to get around that. There's no need to resort to freakin' "it".

PS Buck Angel is TOTALLY hot.
